Magdalena 2008

The origin of these celebrations is the transferral of the city of Castellón from the Magdalena hill to the coastal plain in 1251.

With the Cavalcada del Pregó, a mythological, historical and traditional event, the celebrations begin. One of the most ancient and emotive events is the Romería of the Magdalena, also called de les Canyes, celebrated on the third Sunday in Lent, to which many people from Castellón attend carrying a canes with green silk ribbons.

In the afternoon, after the Tornà (the return) from the romería, the Gaiates parade will take place with carriages with illuminated bandstands that remember old lanterns used by the people from Castellón when descending the hill to the Plain.

One of the most spectacular moments takes place when the Gaiates from the 19 festive commissions and the one from the Town Hall create a lighted snake illuminating Castellón de la Plana. On Monday all the Gaiates will be lighted one by one by one in the presence of the Queen of the celebrations in the Encesa (light) creating a light show that blends with Castellon´s night sky.
A very emotive, spectacular and ancient act is celebrated on the second Saturday during Magdalena Festivities is the flower offer to the Mare de Déu del Lledó, the city's patron.
